OCR: Amelia Earhart Although she never went into space, Amelia Earhart is famous as a pilot. She opened many doors for woman by showing that woman could be tough, skilled and brave just like men. Earhart was the first to fly non-stop from California to Hawaii, and broke many records set by men. As a woman pilot she set many FIRSTS not only for women, but for all pilots. She was lost at sea in 1938 while trying to be the first to fly around the world. Many people still wonder what happened to her because there was no distress call and her plane was never found. She seemed to just vanish.
